ORAL CANCER SCREENINGS

Keep your mouth healthy with routine oral cancer screenings. We examine all the tissue in the face, throat, mouth, and gums for any potential signs of oral cancer.

Approximately 53,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year, causing over 9,750 deaths (roughly 1 person per hour). Out of those 53,000 newly diagnosed individuals, nearly half will be alive in 5 years (57%). Oral cancer is more common than other cancers, such as cervical cancer, Hodgkin's Lymphoma, laryngeal cancer, and many more. Learn more at www.oralcancerfoundation.org.

Our office can help provide you with peace of mind with a thorough screening. Call us at (205) 733-8300 to schedule an appointment!

COMPOSITE AND AMALGAM FILLINGS

Our office offers both amalgam fillings and composite fillings. Traditional amalgam fillings are silver in coloration while our composite fillings are made to match the color of your teeth.

SIMPLE EXTRACTIONS

Tooth extractions can be painless with our convenient same day, in-office extractions. We utilize a local anesthesia to numb the area and cause minimal hindrances to the rest of your day.

Teeth may need to be removed for a variety of reasons:
• Teeth may be diseased causing an infection in the root of the tooth, requiring removal.
• Teeth can also need to be extracted to make way for dental devices, such as dentures, implants, and braces.
• Many patients do not have the room in their mouths to allow their wisdom teeth to remain. This can result in impaction, pain, or movement of the surrounding teeth.

When surgery is needed to extract one or more teeth, Dr. DiChiara may refer you to an oral surgeon to complete the procedure.

MOUTH GUARDS

Protecting your smile is important. We offer custom bite guards, sports mouth guards, TMJ splints, and snore guards. Schedule your appointment to be fitted with your device.

Custom Bite Guard | Designed to specifically fit your teeth and mouth, a custom bite guard is fitted by creating an impression of your teeth. The custom bite guard is then cast using this impression to deliver the ultimate in comfort and protection from teeth grinding. Dr. DiChiara will determine which arch (top or bottom teeth, but not both) your custom guard will be worn on based on diagnosis.

Sports Mouth Guard | Available at most sporting goods stores, a sports mouth guard protects your teeth from injury during physical activity. While there are standard stock guards that provide little in the way of custom fit, boil and bite guards allow some customization by softening the thermoplastic material in boiling water to better mold to your bite.

Snore Guard | As its name suggests, a snore guard is an oral appliance that is designed to help alleviate night time snoring by adjusting the position of your jaw to maintain an open airway during sleep. When worn correctly, snore guards should greatly reduce snoring.

CROWNS AND BRIDGES

Our dental staff specializes in crowns and bridges. If you have missing, chipped, cracked, or broken teeth give us a call! We can restore your smile and have you back to your routine in no time.

Family Dental Services: Common Questions About Preventive and Routine Dental Care

  • What Services Does a Family Dentist Provide?

A family dentist offers preventive, restorative, and general oral health care for children, teens, adults, and seniors. Common family dental services include dental cleanings, exams, fillings, crowns, fluoride treatments, and gum disease care.

Many family dental practices also provide:

    • Digital X-rays.

    • Tooth extractions.

    • Sealants for children.

    • Oral cancer screenings.

    • Custom mouthguards.

Family dentistry helps patients maintain consistent care through every stage of life.

  • How Often Should a Family Visit the Dentist?

Most patients benefit from visiting the dentist every six months for routine exams and professional cleanings. Regular visits help detect cavities, gum disease, and other oral health concerns early.

Some patients may require more frequent appointments based on:

    • Gum disease history.

    • Orthodontic treatment.

    • Chronic dry mouth.

    • High cavity risk.

Consistent preventive care supports healthier teeth and gums over time.

  • Can a Family Dentist Treat Both Children and Adults?

Yes. Family dentists are trained to provide care for patients of all ages, making it easier for households to receive treatment in one location. This approach improves convenience and continuity of care.

    Family dental offices commonly treat:

    • Toddlers and young children.

    • Teenagers.

    • Adults.

    • Older adults.

Comprehensive family dental services allow patients to build long-term relationships with a trusted dental team.

  • How Does Early Dental Care Benefit a Child in the Long-Term?

Early dental care helps children develop healthy habits and lowers the risk of future dental problems. Routine checkups also allow dentists to monitor tooth development and identify concerns before they become more serious.

    Long-term benefits may include:

    • Reduced cavity risk.

    • Better oral hygiene habits.

    • Early orthodontic monitoring.

    • Improved speech and chewing development.

Preventive dental visits can also help children feel more comfortable during future appointments.

  • What Should Patients Bring to Their First Dental Appointment?

New patients should bring identification, insurance information, a list of medications, and any previous dental records if available. This information helps the dental team create a complete oral health profile.

Patients may also be asked about:

    • Medical history.

    • Dental concerns.

    • Allergies.

    • Previous treatments.

Accurate information supports safer and more personalized dental care.

Cosmetic Dental Treatments: Frequently Asked Questions About Smile Enhancement

  • What Is Cosmetic Dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry focuses on improving the appearance of teeth, gums, and smiles. Common cosmetic dental treatments are designed to enhance tooth color, shape, alignment, and overall symmetry.

    These treatments may include:

    • Professional teeth whitening.

    • Dental veneers.

    • Tooth bonding.

    • Invisalign aligners.

    • Cosmetic crowns.

Many cosmetic procedures also support oral function in addition to appearance.

  • What Are the Most Popular Cosmetic Dental Treatments Available?

Popular cosmetic procedures include whitening, veneers, clear aligners, and dental bonding. These treatments help address discoloration, chips, uneven spacing, and mild alignment concerns.

The right treatment depends on factors such as:

    • Oral health condition.

    • Smile goals.

    • Budget.

    • Treatment timeline.

A dental consultation helps determine the most appropriate option for each patient.

  • Will Cosmetic Dental Work Look Natural?

Modern cosmetic procedures are designed to blend naturally with surrounding teeth. Dentists carefully match tooth color, shape, and proportions to create balanced results.

    Natural-looking outcomes are supported by:

    • High-quality dental materials.

    • Digital imaging technology.

    • Customized treatment planning.

    • Conservative techniques.

Patients often choose cosmetic care to improve confidence while maintaining a realistic appearance.

  • Is Cosmetic Dentistry Covered by Dental Insurance?

Insurance coverage varies depending on the procedure and whether treatment is considered medically necessary. Many purely cosmetic procedures are not fully covered under standard dental plans.

However, partial coverage may apply when treatment improves:

    • Tooth structure.

    • Oral function.

    • Bite alignment.

    • Damaged teeth restoration.

Patients should contact their insurance provider to confirm benefits and eligibility before treatment begins.

  • How Long Do Cosmetic Dental Treatments Last?

The lifespan of cosmetic procedures depends on the type of treatment, oral hygiene habits, and lifestyle factors. Some procedures may last several years with proper maintenance.

    Average treatment longevity may include:

Routine dental visits and good oral care habits can help extend treatment results.

  • Can Cosmetic Dentistry Fix Crooked Teeth Without Braces?

Yes. Some mild to moderate alignment issues may be corrected without traditional braces. Clear aligners and veneers are common options for improving the appearance of the smile.

    Treatment recommendations depend on:

    • Tooth positioning.

    • Bite condition.

    • Spacing issues.

    • Overall oral health.

A dental evaluation helps determine whether cosmetic or orthodontic treatment is the better solution for alignment concerns.
